Monty Roberts, known as the “Man Who Listens to Horses” has led an extraordinary life. He is an award-winning trainer of championship horses, New York Times best-selling author, Hollywood stunt man, foster dad to 47 children (in addition to three of his own) and creator of the world-renowned and revolutionary equine training technique called Join~Up. Over 60 years ago, Monty discovered he could utilize the nonverbal communication that goes on between horses. This changed everything for him about working with horses.
Monty has now achieved a lifetime of international awards and accomplishments including 9 world championships in the show arena. He regularly trains for Queen Elizabeth II at the Royal Stables and tours the globe demonstrating in front of live audiences. He has received a doctorate from the University of Zurich in Behavioral Sciences for his breakthrough work. And he recently received an MVO award from Her Majesty who also became Patron of the non-profit he founded, in part, for his work with horses and veterans with stress related injuries.
Monty incorporates “Equus”, a silent language of gestures like signing for the deaf, into his nonviolent training approach called Join-Up®, developed to stop the cycle of violence typically accepted in traditional horse breaking that he had witnessed while growing up.
Convinced there must be a more effective and gentle method, Monty created a consistent set of principles using the horse’s inherent methods of communication and herd behavior. Now Monty's mission is to leave the world a better place for horses, and for people too.
